Hotel Grande Bretagne

A Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens

With breathtaking views of the fabled Acropolis, regal Syntagma Square and the Parliament, lush Lycabettus Hill or the original Olympic Stadium, the multi-awarded 5 star Hotel Grande Bretagne offers an unrivaled perspective of Athens’ mythical history. Located right in the heart of the city, this landmark hotel is within walking distance of exclusive shopping areas, museums and the business district.

Since its 19th-century establishment, the Grande Bretagne has been the only choice for royalty, heads of state, celebrities and VIPs, a distinction which still holds true today.

Churchill, Onassis, the Kennedys, Maria Callas, Elizabeth Taylor, Jacques Chirac and many more personalities have stayed at the 148-year-old landmark that has played a legendary role in the city’s social and political life. Its salons have seen treaty-signing politicians, deal-making industrialists and matchmaking socialites, the building even serving as the one-time government headquarters.

Grande Bretagne means “Great Britain” in French, so named when the circa-1842 Dimitriou-family villa designed by Dane Theophile Hansen was opened to eager European travellers in 1874 by its new owner, the palace-and-Paris-trained chef, Stathis Lampsas.

Lampsa Hellenic Hotels S.A., the hotel owning company, has been listed in the Athens stock exchange since 1946. Hyatt Regency S.A acquired control of the company in 2000, with the vision to return the once famous Athens landmark to its former splendour. The new owners embarked on a massive, $100 million dollars renovation program to reinstate the Hotel Grande Bretagne in its previous pre-eminence as a premier, five-star luxury establishment. A very ambitious refurbishment program was successfully executed, with state-of-the-art facilities, 320 rooms and suites, including a Royal and Presidential, indoor heated and roof-top open-air swimming pools, a luxurious spa, two restaurants, a Grand Ballroom and many conference rooms and all amenities one would expect from a modern, 21st century five-star hotel. In 2004, following the completion of the first profitable year of operations since many decades, Hyatt Regency S.A. sold its participation to the Laskaridis Family, one of its main shareholders, who, by also participating in the increase of the company’s share capital, acquired full control of the company.

The sense of genteel comfort extends to butler and valet services, a 24-hour concierge, a cigar lounge, a wine-tasting cellar and a seasonal poolside bar with a stunning view of the Lycabettus Hill. All rooms have internet access, voicemail, minibar, safe, CD/stereo player, satellite flat screen TV, deluxe bath accoutrements, bathrobes and slippers, while wheelchair accessible rooms are also available, as well as babysitting service and an on-premises hair and barber salon, a lobby shop and a business centre.

The Presidential and Royal suites have their own unique styles with adjoining rooms, salons and steam baths. The 400m2 (4,300-square-foot) Royal Suite includes a 16-seat dining-room, fireplace, sauna, gym and soaking tub, and the 200m2 (2,150-square-foot) Presidential Suite has a special built-in, two-sided plasma television, steam bath and walk-in closets.

Palatial conference and banqueting rooms meet exacting standards for 12 to 600 guests and include audio-visual services, while the GB restaurants continue to host romantic dinners, power lunches and intimate celebratory feasts alike.

The GB Corner Gifts & Flavors the most renowned “corner of Athens” welcomes guests to a magic world filled with unique shopping and gift ideas such as the authentic selection of GB Products, handmade fashion clothing and an exclusive variety of desserts.

The much-lauded rooftop GB Roof Garden Restaurant & Bar serves Mediterranean cuisine has an outstanding Acropolis view and has been cited by many magazines as one of the top things to do in Athens.
